This one was definitely a lot more freestyle in how I approached it. I kind of just started tossing shapes together in Blender for the building, and plopped it onto a terrain in Unity. Sometimes it’s fun to just make without any specific goal in mind!
This was a deviation from a lot of the other landscapes I did, in that it was just hand modeled geometry, without any terrain systems in use. I could feel this one getting very complicated very fast, and since this was a 1-day project, I had to cut it off at a certain point.
I tried to emulate the very beginning of one of my favorite games of all time, Silent Hill 2. I have so much to say about that game and the themes it deal with, but I always found this starting area to be very somber. It’s tranquil, but also is essentially the entryway to James Sunderland’s very own turbulent mind, in the form of a mysterious town.
Really tried going for something deeply unsettling and ominous with this one. A hellscape of Geiger-esque buildings meant for a purpose beyond your mortal comprehension.
The frostpunk future is anything but hopeful, and droves of people are forced to live in camping communes below a massive bridge leading to the ominous city in the distance. With very little foliage in sight, hope is becoming increasingly harder to find.
A massive underground cavern, with an inexplicable night sky hanging far above it. Inspired by the breathtaking view of Elden Ring’s Siofra River, this was a fun one to make!
A doorway to the mythical city of Carcosa, first described by Ambrose Bierce back in 1886. Carcosa has always been fascinating to me, mainly due to how mysterious it is. Like all good existential horror, it’s hard to put into words just what the place really is.
A temple floating in the sky, with a giant tornado violently raging in the center of it all. Inspired by Elden Ring’s Farum Azula, this landscape was an experiment with creating a stunning, mesh-based tornado.
I really love this one. The setting is awesome on its own, but I’m very proud of being able to develop a great looking tornado that uses only mesh, and no particles.
